Jen Corcoran

Founder / Producer

Based in northeast England, Jen Corcoran founded Freya Films in 2019 to develop stories that challenge audiences and have the ability to stir deep emotion and empathy across cultural and language barriers. Her aim is to seek out projects with intelligence and integrity that represent her passions and principles.

Jen’s current projects include TISH, a portrait of social documentary photographer Tish Murtha directed by Paul Sng. Supported by BFI Doc Society Fund, Screen Scotland and BBC Arts/BBC England, the film will premiere as the Opening Gala at Sheffield Doc/Fest 2023.

Jen’s breakthrough feature NASCONDINO (HIDE & SEEK) was directed by Victoria Fiore and premiered in the Grierson Documentary Competition at LFF 2021 and the DOX:AWARD Competition at CPH:DOX 2022. The film was nominated for four awards at BIFA 2022 including Best Documentary.

As former Head of Film at boutique production company My Accomplice Jen oversaw a factual slate including Coldplay’s A HEAD FULL OF DREAMS (2018, dir. Mat Whitecross) and THE QUIET ONE (2019, dir. Oliver Murray). Jen also delivered UK production services for THE GREAT HACK (2019, dir. Karim Amer, Jehane Noujam). Jen’s short form work has platformed at Sheffield DocFest, BFI Flare and LSFF among others.

Between July 2019 – October 2020 Jen developed and managed award-winning regional development programme Tees Valley Screen with North East Screen and the European Regional Development Fund.  As a writer and programmer Jen has curated film programmes for LSFF, Synthesis Festival (Kaliningrad) and Cine North and lectures at Teesside University (Producing MA).

Jen is a member of BAFTA. Professional development labs include Rotterdam Lab 2021, BFI Network x BAFTA Mentorship Programme 2020, BFI Network@LFF 2019 and Sheffield Doc/Fest Future Producer 2015. Jen also took part in the steering group for BAFTA’s Diversity Review in 2020.

NASCONDINO (HIDE & SEEK)

Since the early 2010s and in response to a rising level of youth crime, the Italian justice system has operated under a policy that allows courts to remove high-risk children from families involved in organised crime. At risk is Entoni, a rambunctious 12-year-old boy, a mischievous but sweet fixture in Naples' Spanish Quarters. His grandmother Dora is determined to steer him towards the right track despite her own criminal past. Stunningly shot and featuring unparalleled access to the world of inner-city Naples, Nascondino (Hide and Seek) captures the spirit and soul of a neighbourhood that finds itself both maligned and glamorised. A mythological and spiritual portrait of a community's hopes and regrets, its search for redemption and the importance of family in Neapolitan life.

"[NASCONDINO] enters the minds and hearts of its main protagonists... Fiore expertly combines observations on wildly different scales to reach a kind of ecstatic truth that is as beautiful as it is heart wrenching.” Elena Lazic, Cineuropa
